Remich or Mondorf-les-Bains: Choosing Your Moselle Base

One is a riverfront wine town, the other a spa town inland—both make good bases, but for different trips.

Remich or Mondorf-les-Bains: Choosing Your Moselle Base

Two Towns, Two Different Rhythms

Remich sits directly on the Moselle, its quays lined with cafés and the riverfront promenade busy from April to October. The town is compact: the Caves St Martin and the wine cooperative are within walking distance, and the German border is a bridge away. Mondorf-les-Bains lies about 12 km inland, a 20-minute drive southwest. It is quieter, greener and centred on the thermal baths and the casino. If you want to walk to dinner along the water, Remich wins; if you want a pool and a park, Mondorf does.

Both are in the Luxembourg Moselle region, but they serve different holidays. Remich is a base for wine tasting, cycling the Moselle Cycle Path and crossing into Germany for dinner. Mondorf is a base for spa treatments, golf and easy access to the French border. Families often prefer Mondorf for the outdoor pool and the calm; couples on a wine weekend almost always choose Remich. Neither is a nightlife hub.

Getting There and Getting Around

Remich is about 25 km from Luxembourg City, a 30-minute drive via the A3 and N2. Buses run hourly from the capital (line 411), but the journey takes around 50 minutes. Mondorf-les-Bains is slightly closer to the city: 20 km, 25 minutes by car, with bus line 175. Neither town has a train station. If you are arriving by train, you will need a bus or car from Luxembourg City, Bettembourg or Wasserbillig. Parking in Remich is free along the river outside peak summer weekends, when the quays fill by 10am.

For wine tasting, Remich is the better base: the Route du Vin runs northeast through Wormeldange, Ehnen and Grevenmacher, and the Caves St Martin offers tastings in the town itself. Mondorf is 15 km from the nearest vineyard, so you will need a car or a taxi to visit. The Moselle Cycle Path passes through Remich, and bike hire is available near the bridge. Mondorf has no river path, but the surrounding countryside is good for walking.

Where to Stay and What to Expect

Remich has a small stock of hotels, mostly three-star, plus guesthouses and a few apartments. Rooms on the riverfront cost more in summer. Expect simple comfort rather than luxury; the appeal is the location. Mondorf has a larger resort-style hotel attached to the thermal baths, with spa access and a broader range of facilities, plus a few smaller hotels near the casino. If you want a pool, a sauna and a quiet garden, Mondorf is the obvious choice; if you want to step out of your hotel and be on the wine route, book Remich.

I would book Remich for a two- or three-night spring or autumn trip focused on wine and cycling, and Mondorf for a longer stay with a spa element or for a winter weekend when the riverfront is quiet. Note that many Remich restaurants close on Mondays and Tuesdays outside summer. Mondorf's hotel restaurants tend to open daily. For families, Mondorf's outdoor pool and park are a practical advantage; for couples, Remich's riverside dining is the draw.

When to Go and What to Skip

Best months for Remich are May, June and September, when the terraces are open but the summer crowds have not peaked. July and August are lively but parking is difficult and riverside tables need booking. The grape harvest in late September brings events in the wine villages. Mondorf is a year-round destination thanks to the thermal baths, though the outdoor pool is closed from October to April. Winter is quiet in both towns, with reduced opening hours at some restaurants and attractions.

Skip Remich if you want a resort with a pool and on-site dining every night; skip Mondorf if you plan to spend your days cycling the Moselle and tasting wine. Do not skip the drive between the two: the N16 through Dalheim and Lenningen is a pleasant 15 minutes through farmland. If you are combining both, stay two nights in Remich and one in Mondorf rather than splitting a short trip. Book ahead for summer weekends in Remich, when the riverfront fills quickly.

Questions, answered

Can I visit both Remich and Mondorf-les-Bains without a car?

It is possible but awkward. Bus line 175 connects Mondorf to Luxembourg City, and line 411 serves Remich, but there is no direct bus between the two towns. You would need to change in Luxembourg City or take a taxi, which takes about 20 minutes.

Which town is better for a family with young children?

Mondorf-les-Bains is generally easier for families: the outdoor pool, park and quieter streets suit young children. Remich's riverfront has traffic and the quays are not fenced. That said, Remich has short riverside walks and boat trips that older children enjoy.

Is Remich or Mondorf better for a winter weekend?

Mondorf, because the thermal baths are open year-round and the resort hotel offers indoor facilities. Remich is quiet in winter, with many riverside restaurants closed or on reduced hours. If you visit Remich in winter, check opening times before booking.
