Day Trips from Esch-sur-Alzette by Bus and Train

Luxembourg City: the obvious first trip

The train from Esch-sur-Alzette to Luxembourg Gare runs twice an hour and takes about 25 minutes. Buy a single ticket for zone 1+2 at roughly 4 euros, or use the free public transport that covers the whole country. From the Gare, walk 15 minutes down Avenue de la Liberté to the centre, or take the tram. Book a hotel near Place d'Armes or the Gare if you want dinner in the city after a day of walking the Corniche and the Grund.

Skip the tourist train and walk instead: the Chemin de la Corniche to the Bock casemates, then down to the Grund for a coffee. The Mudam and the National Museum of History and Art are both worth two hours. If you have time, take bus 9 to the European quarter at Kirchberg. Return trains run until after midnight, so an evening in the city is easy. I would book a hotel in Luxembourg City for one night rather than rush back.

Trier: the Roman city across the German border

Trier is the best day trip from Esch if you like Roman history. Take the train from Esch to Luxembourg Gare, then the regional express to Trier Hauptbahnhof. The total journey is about 1 hour 15 minutes, with a change in Luxembourg. A day ticket for the whole trip costs around 10 euros. The Porta Nigra, the amphitheatre and the Kaiserthermen are all within a 20-minute walk of the station. Allow a full day.

The Moselle river is a 15-minute walk from the centre, and the Roman bridge is still in use. Trier is busy on Saturdays in summer, so go on a weekday if you can. The Christmas market in December is crowded but atmospheric. I would skip the optional boat trips in winter and spend the time in the Landesmuseum instead. Book a hotel in Esch for the night before and after, since the last train back leaves before 10 pm.

The Moselle: Remich, Grevenmacher and the vineyards

The Moselle valley is Luxembourg's wine region, and it is reachable by bus from Esch. Take the train to Luxembourg Gare, then bus 200 to Remich (about 45 minutes). Remich has a pretty promenade and the Saint-Nicolas church. From there, bus 450 follows the river to Grevenmacher and Wasserbillig. The whole route is covered by the free transport network. The best months are May, June and September, when the vineyards are green or golden and the weather is mild.

Wine tastings at the Caves St Martin in Remich or the Bernard-Massard in Grevenmacher need booking ahead, and they are not cheap: expect 15 to 25 euros for a tasting. If you just want a walk, the Sentier viticole from Remich to Stadtbredimus is 5 km and flat. I would book a hotel in Remich or Grevenmacher for one night to enjoy dinner on the river, rather than rushing back to Esch. Skip the boat tours on Mondays, when many places close.

The Minett and the south: industrial heritage

The Minett region around Esch is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and the industrial heritage is worth a day. The National Mining Museum in Rumelange is a 15-minute bus ride from Esch (bus 321). The museum includes a underground tour, which is 90 minutes and costs about 10 euros. Book ahead for the English tour. From there, bus 322 continues to Differdange, where the Ellergronn nature reserve has marked trails through former iron ore mines.

For a shorter trip, take bus 4 from Esch to Belval, the former steelworks turned university quarter. The Blast Furnace is open for guided tours, and the campus is a striking place for a walk. The whole area is flat and easy by bike, and you can rent one at the Esch station. I would skip the shopping centre at Belval and head for the Belval Plaza for lunch instead. Book a hotel in Esch for the night, as the area is quiet in the evening.

Do I need a car for these day trips?

No. All the destinations in this article are reachable by bus and train, and public transport in Luxembourg is free. For Trier, you pay a small international fare. The trains and buses are frequent and reliable.

How much does public transport cost in Luxembourg?

What is the best day trip from Esch for families?

The National Mining Museum in Rumelange is a good choice for families with older children, as the underground tour is engaging. Belval is also easy and free, with open spaces and the blast furnace. The Moselle is better for a relaxed walk.

How long does it take to get to Trier from Esch?

The journey takes about 1 hour 15 minutes, with a change at Luxembourg Gare. Trains run hourly. The last train back to Luxembourg leaves Trier before 10 pm, so plan your day accordingly.

Where can I stay for these day trips?

Esch-sur-Alzette has several hotels near the station and the centre, which makes it a good base. For the Moselle, consider a hotel in Remich or Grevenmacher. For Trier, you could stay in Luxembourg City for more evening options.

Are the museums open on Mondays?

May, June and September are ideal for the Moselle, with mild weather and active vineyards. July and August are warmer but busier. The wine harvest in September is a nice time to visit, though some cellars are busy with work.

Can I do a day trip to Trier and the Moselle in one day?

It is possible but rushed. Trier deserves at least half a day, and the Moselle another half. You could take the train to Trier, then bus to Remich, but you would spend much of the day travelling. Better to pick one.
